Hey! I’m Carolyn Yates, a writer and editor with a focus on the intersection of sexuality with cultural issues and public life.
I’ve written about sex, kink, polyamory, culture, feminism, gender, bodies, books, ideas, and my personal life for Nylon, Bitch, the Toast, Jezebel, Autostraddle, the Billfold, Xtra!, and elsewhere. I’ve discussed sex, kink, and relationships on New York magazine’s Sex Lives podcast, Buffering the Vampire Slayer, DeAnne Smith’s Questionable at Best, Toronto’s CUIT 89.5 fm, and the A+ Podcast.
I’m also the NSFW Editor and Literary Editor for Autostraddle, a queer feminist website and community. I run sex- and kink-, and relationship-related workshops at A-Camp, a conference slash camp slash mountain retreat in Big Bear, California (and sometimes Mukwonago, Wisconsin).
In 2015, I conducted the Ultimate Lesbian Sex Survey, a survey of queer women/humans that is one of the largest of its kind.
I also make zines.
I grew up in Toronto, studied English and political science at McGill University in Montreal, moved to Ottawa, jumped back to Montreal, and recently landed in Los Angeles. It’s much warmer here.
